Said the king unto the minstrel
\nLate last year your kind came here
\nfilling heads with dreams of glory
\nabsent of a war’s true fear<\/p>\n

Heard these tales my sweeting son did
\nSang them as he learned to lead
\nand spoke of war as if a lover
\nand warriors though a dying breed<\/p>\n

He has training of a soldier
\nlike all men of noble birth.
\nHis sword and harness ancient make
\nTheir owner deep within the earth.<\/p>\n

My best commander sent his herald
\nRunning into my last court
\nWith news that foes were now spreading;
\na full-on war we\u2019d not abort.<\/p>\n

I would take the heart of that minstrel<\/em>
\nin my hand until it ceased<\/em>
\nI would drink his blood until my cup ran clear.<\/em>
\nEvery crow sounds like his singing<\/em>
\neach steeple bell that jongleur\u2019s ringing<\/em>
\nI would drain my coffers to have silence near<\/em>
\nAnd cease the sound of clapping in my ear\u2026<\/em>.<\/p>\n

My graceful son was in the corner
\npolishing his armor old.
\nI called his name he did not answer
\nand the door was down in winter cold.<\/p>\n

He took with him his five best men,
\nthough two of them are barely grown.
\nI cannot bear the thought of them
\nriding to a death I’ll own.<\/p>\n

I would take the heart of that minstrel<\/em>
\nin my hand until it ceased<\/em>
\nI would drink his blood until my cup ran clear.<\/em>
\nEvery crow sounds like his singing<\/em>
\neach steeple bell that jongleur\u2019s ringing<\/em>
\nI would drain my coffers to have silence near<\/em>
\nAnd cease the sound of clapping in my ear\u2026.<\/em><\/p>\n

You\u2019ve one last breath to tell a tale
\nthat will outlive you in this strife
\nto honor my boy’s love of story –
\nthough it will not spare your life.<\/p>\n

For tales and songs did take my lad
\neach one was truth, so thought my son
\nwhich led our youth to take up arms
\nand ride where they will be undone.<\/p>\n

The minstrel looked at captor King
\nand saw the grieving in his eyes,
\n\u201cThis may my final story be,
\nI swear to you it holds no lies.\u201d<\/p>\n

As I came past the foreign borders
\nI saw five lads on horses tall.
\none of them spoke like a king
\ncommanding over one and all<\/p>\n

A hero from another time –
\nas though a legend had took flesh
\nbehind marched weary retinue
\nwith eyes a-shining and refreshed.<\/p>\n

Seeing that this way I came
\nthe commander said these words to me:
\n\u201cTell our King his son turned the tide –
\nall hearing him have sworn to keep us free.\u201d<\/p>\n

Would you still take the heart of that minstrel<\/em>
\nin your hand until it ceased?<\/em>
\nWould you drink his blood until your cup ran clear?<\/em>
\nEvery crow sounds like his singing<\/em>

This song was written after returning from Pennsic XLI, as a sort of reaction to my own questions about what bards do, and what their role is in the SCA. It’s a bit about both camps of people who appreciate and don’t appreciate the form, and also it’s an homage to the fighting field – where I often long to be…perhaps because I am inspired to tell tales like this one after I’ve been there.<\/em><\/p>\n
