<\/em>Once a to a thistle came a bee
\nwhich upon his stem alighted
\nto consort with blossoms sweet;
\nthe thistle was delighted.<\/p>\n

Said the thistle to the bee,
\nYou fear not my greeny thorn,
\nIt is plain that we could love
\nbetter than all others born.<\/p>\n

I see you have a thorn yourself,
\nA maiden so protected
\nCould nestle in my filmy down
\nBy prickles unaffected.<\/p>\n

The bee she drank his nectar fine
\nBuzzing her wings in gentle song
\nDancing her dance upon his leaves
\nKissing blossoms the day long.<\/p>\n

Swooning in the highland wind
\nThe thistle felt his joy ignited
\nBut as his petals slowly drained,
\nHis love, alas, was unrequited.<\/p>\n

With golden pollen now bedecked
\nthe merry bee flew to her hive.
\nThe thistle wept a milky tear
\nbereft of love and now deprived.<\/p>\n

Young men and maids hear this tale
\nLove not those who do briefly tarry
\nBe not the longing thistle here
\nwho too quick loves and is not wary.<\/p>\n

Like flighty bee you should eschew
\nWho samples each and every flower
\nArmed with stinger near and sharp
\nto first seduce and then devour.<\/p>\n

But in all loves be tempered true
\nFor love will find you where you are.
\nThink of the thistle and the bee
\nE’re you set your heart too far.<\/p>\n

A poem for no other reason than that it seemed that two common, prickly things which were not afraid of each other might fall in love, and that it might work beautifully. That was how this started in my head, but the poem decided that it would be, alas, a cautionary tale instead…<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
