A knight went a riding on the finest of days
\nnever to think of fate’s fickle ways.
\nHe sang a sweet song as he rode through the wood
\nthe day had portents of nothing but good.<\/p>\n

But deep in the forest came a scent on the breeze
\nof fire and danger, unseen through the trees.
\nIt came from village, his castle, his keep
\nwhere he had just that morn left his lady asleep.<\/p>\n

He turned round his charger and blew loud the horn.
\nHe tore ore the thickets and jumped ore the thorn.
\nHe near broke his mount with his spurs in her side
\nto beat the flames like thunder he’d ride<\/p>\n

Beneath the bright sky of impossible blue
\nthe sky was now colored an impossible hue.
\nThe keep had been broken the great towers were down;
\nhis squires were all dead and the place held no sound.<\/p>\n

Heedless of all, he charged through the gate
\nuntil he found his lady he would not abate.
\nHe found her struck mute by the sights she had seen
\nin the courtyard garden, grey o’re the green.<\/p>\n

She wore fine silver ashes instead of a gown.
\nShe wore broken windows in place of her crown.
\nShe looked right through him as he lifted her high.
\nShe did not once move, or utter a sigh.<\/p>\n

The knight tried all the things that the stories do tell
\nfrom magical apples to the life-giving well.
\nThe gifts she ignored and the glass pushed away,
\nfor her madness kept in her the fear of that day.<\/p>\n

She built a wide fortress inside of her heart
\nwith stones o’re the gate, and no weakening art.
\nShe dug it in deep, and moved below the earth
\nliving as dead alone in that dark berth.<\/p>\n

At last the brave man built o’re every door
\nand changed all the standards to gules from bright or.
\nHe had given his oath to care for his wife,
\nand so planted a garden to surround her with life.<\/p>\n

His lady did die in her fortress so cold.
\nHis love could not reach her, no matter how bold.
\nHe had done what he could, and is spotless of blame.
\nHe mourned her with candles, and wept at the flame.<\/p>\n

The wound still aches hotly when the smoke fills the air,
\nthough nothing is burning, he senses it there.
\nWhen he hears the sweet tune he was singing that day
\nin spite of himself, he is carried away.<\/p>\n

Oh would I could bring him some succor and peace,
\nA balm or a salve that could make his pain cease.
\nDo not succumb to your dear lady’s fate,
\nFor a garden grows richly outside your estate.<\/p>\n

I cannot bring back the castle or rebuild his keep
\nI have only my voice to lullay him to sleep.
\nBut I will protect him, his sorrows allay
\nSo rest, sweet knight, slumber and dream of the day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
