“This is my take on the classic hunter and hind trope, which we all know to be really about ladies, love and mystical experiences (and in some songs, more earthly experiences too.) In this song, the king’s man and the king’s Lady find themselves in the realm that passes through the King’s forest, which may be ultimately to their salvation.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The king’s man took into the wood
\nto catch some coneys, fleet and good
\nwith his dogs a-running o’re the ground
\nso swiftly that there was no sound.<\/p>\n

The king’s man saw from out his eye
\na flash of gold a-bounding by.
\nIt was a stag with antlers tall,
\nsurely the lord of wood stags all.<\/p>\n

He left his hounds in thicket green
\nto catch this creature he had seen
\nto lay at his belov’d queen’s feet
\nits golden pelt and fragrant meat.<\/p>\n

With a hey ho<\/em>
\n to the wood we go<\/em>
\n for to catch him with the bolt and bow.<\/em>
\n With a hey hei<\/em>
\n watch him fly<\/em>
\n as the lord of the wood we follow.<\/em><\/p>\n

The king’s Lady on her palfrey white
\nwent a-riding in the sunshine bright.
\nThrough the flowers and past the bees,
\no’re the path between great trees.<\/p>\n

Gently on she softly tread,
\nwandering where her fancy lead,
\nwhen came a sound upon the trail
\nas doe of silver past did sail.<\/p>\n

To see the doe made her heart bloom
\nand so she took off through the broom
\nto touch with her own gentle hand
\nthis hind most lovely in the land.<\/p>\n

With a hey ho<\/em>
\n to the wood we go<\/em>
\n to see the hart in the summer’s glow.<\/em>
\n With a hey hei<\/em>
\n watch them fly<\/em>
\n as through the wood we follow.<\/em><\/p>\n

Into a clearing verdant green
\nthe golden stag ran, clearly seen.
\nThe silver doe, she met his stride
\nas the Lady and king’s man did ride.<\/p>\n

The king’s man poised to bring them down
\nas gift to serve before the crown.
\nThe Lady saw his bolt on high
\nand ran ‘ere he could let it fly.<\/p>\n

Though swift, he fumbled and it flew,
\nand met its mark as it would do.
\nThe lady’s hands rushed to her breast
\nwhere now the bolt did redly rest.<\/p>\n

With a hey ho<\/em>
\n to the wood we go<\/em>
\n though the hunt we now forgo.<\/em>
\n With a hey hei<\/em>
\n watch them fly<\/em>
\n as into the wood we follow.<\/em><\/p>\n

The man looked where the Lady fell
\namid the leaves of mossy dell,
\nher hair as auburn as the pine
\nher blood as red as ruby wine.<\/p>\n

The the golden hind lifted her head,
\nand then his sliver lady lead
\nthe king’s good man unto her side
\nto pull the bolt before she died.<\/p>\n

He winced to cause her any pain,
\nbut bowed to the great creatures’ reign.
\nHe tore the wounding arrow through,
\nand breaking, broke his heart in two.<\/p>\n

With a hey ho
\nto the wood we go
\nto find them in a thicket low.
\nWith a hey hei
\nwatch them fly
\nas into the wood we follow.<\/em><\/p>\n

The silver one did kiss the wound
\nas the Lady weakly swooned.
\nThe golden lord did nudge the man
\nto listen as her breath began.<\/p>\n

With his queen, living, in his arms,
\nthe king’s man fled the clearing’s charms.
\nAt the palfrey’s side his charger ran
\nfrom this kingdom not of man.<\/p>\n

The mighty stag walked with his mate
\ndeep through the woods with steady gait.
\nThe royal forest quiet lay
\nin the glowing of the day.<\/p>\n

With a hey ho<\/em>
\n to the wood we go<\/em>
\n to the realm of stag and merry doe.<\/em>
\n With a hey hei<\/em>
\n watch them fly<\/em>
