I wrote this song for myself and for other friends who have become parents, seeing our lives — and our adventures — change.<\/p>\n

It’s not always easy. But there it is.<\/p>\n\n

When we were young<\/b><\/p>\n

our swords were steel<\/p>\n

and we fought dragons<\/p>\n

We\u2019d oil the moat<\/p>\n

and stand to watch it burn.<\/p>\n

We climbed mountains<\/p>\n

as the snow lay crisp around us.<\/p>\n

We bragged of love<\/p>\n

and mighty sacrifice.<\/p>\n

When we were young<\/p>\n

Our arms were strong<\/p>\n

our heads were more so<\/p>\n

We\u2019d oil our faces<\/p>\n

and cavort around the fire.<\/p>\n

We\u2019d stumble, falling<\/p>\n

as the flowers bloomed around us.<\/p>\n

We sang of love<\/p>\n

and mighty sacrifice.<\/p>\n

When we were young<\/p>\n

Our hearts were light<\/p>\n

And we were noble.<\/p>\n

We\u2019d oil the lamps<\/p>\n

and laugh \u2018till they were gone.<\/p>\n

We left taverns<\/p>\n

as the dawn would blush around us.<\/p>\n

We dreamed of love<\/p>\n

and mighty sacrifice.<\/p>\n

When we were young<\/p>\n

our cloaks were thick<\/p>\n

and we would wander.<\/p>\n

We\u2019d oil the cart<\/p>\n

and push \u2018till she would go.<\/p>\n

We picked apples<\/p>\n

as the leaves fell all around us.<\/p>\n

We talked of love<\/p>\n

and mighty sacrifice.<\/p>\n

Now we have young<\/p>\n

our swords are wood<\/p>\n

and we are dragons.<\/p>\n

We oil the pans<\/p>\n

And pray that nothing burns.<\/p>\n

We watch in silence,<\/p>\n

as the stars grow bright around us.<\/p>\n
