He had a plan for music for the coronation, a processional for his Regents. He&#8217;d asked me if I could help get the music for a particular Gregorian chant, the very traditional Salve Regina.<\/p>\n<p>I sent him some sheet music and didn&#8217;t think about it much. This is what the piece is like: <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CAmydVsNMqM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>However, soon enough it was deeply fall and the event was coming. Andrew was about to work on the piece, when he experienced a death in his family and had to travel for several days. Hearing his desperation, I offered to take a stab at adapting the piece.<\/p>\n<p>The Salve Regina has been chanted daily by the Cistercians since 1218 &#8211; it&#8217;s a very old piece of music. It&#8217;s a hymn to Mary, and it&#8217;s very&#8230;.Marian. Exceptionally holy. And therefore, and interesting challenge to secularize.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><strong>Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae:<\/strong><br \/>\n(Hail, Queen, mother merciful:)<br \/>\n<strong>Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.<\/strong><br \/>\n(Life, sweetness, and hope of ours, hail.)<br \/>\n<strong>Ad te clamamus,<\/strong><br \/>\n(To thee we cry)<br \/>\n<strong>exsules, filii Hevae.<\/strong><br \/>\n(Exiles, children of Eve.)<br \/>\n<strong>Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes<\/strong><br \/>\n(To thee we sigh, morning and weeping)<br \/>\n<strong>in hac lacrimarum valle.<\/strong><br \/>\n(in this tearful valley.)<br \/>\n<strong>Eia ergo, Advocata nostra,<\/strong><br \/>\n(Quick then, Advocate of ours,)<br \/>\n<strong>illos tuos misericordes oculos<\/strong><br \/>\n(those thy merciful eyes)<br \/>\n<strong>ad nos converte.<\/strong><br \/>\n(to us turn.)<br \/>\n<strong>Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,<\/strong><br \/>\n(And Jesus, blessed fruit of womb thine,)<br \/>\n<strong>nobis, post hoc exsilium ostende.<\/strong><br \/>\n(unto us, after this exile show)<br \/>\n<strong>O clemens: O pia: O dulcis<\/strong><br \/>\n(O clement: O loving: O sweet)<br \/>\n<strong>Virgo Maria.<\/strong><br \/>\n(Virgin Mary.)<\/p>\n<p>Adapting the piece would be a challenge &#8211; it had to<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>be about the Midrealm<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>be appropriate to our SCA experiences<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>keep the same feeling as the original (and respect)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>have appropriate scansion and end vowels whenever possible<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>make some kind of sense to someone who isn&#8217;t me<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I took to the text of the piece carefully. I&#8217;m not a Latin scholar. This was very outside my comfort zone and it had a pretty quick turnaround time &#8211; just a few days before it had to go to the people who would create an arrangement of it and learn it for the Midrealm Coronation.<\/p>\n<h2>The Process<\/h2>\n<p>I took the piece and looked for a concept to adapt. Fortunately, some of the Peerage oaths of the Midrealm are traditional and have supplied translations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><em>Hic fidelitatem et ministerium promitto \/ I here swear fealty and service<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Coronae Mediterranae \/ To the Crown of the Middle Kingdom.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Semper Coronam ditare \/ To ever enrich the Crown.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Talento et ingenio meo \/ With my talents and abilities.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Artibus diversis favere \/ To promote the diverse arts,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Institutionem discipulorum meorum continuare \/ To continue the instruction of my dependents,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Gloriam Mediterranae augere \/ To increase the glory of the Middle Kingdom,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Et digna serto quod gero esse \/ And to be worthy of the Wreath I wear&#8230;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Sic promitto, &lt;&lt;Name&gt;&gt;. \/ thus swear I, &lt;&lt;Name&gt;&gt;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><em>Hic fianciam juro et humagium ago \/\u00a0I here swear fealty and do homage<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Coronae Regni Medii \/\u00a0To the Crown of the Middle Kingdom<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Coronae servire in omnibus rebus \/\u00a0To serve the Crown in all things<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Meminisse comitatis et benignitatis \/\u00a0To remember courtesy and kindness<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Aestimare justiciam ante lucrum privatum \/\u00a0To prize justice above personal gain<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Laborare in bonum commune \/\u00a0To labor for the common good<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Locupletare Regnum et Societatem \/\u00a0To enrich the Kingdom and the Society<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Ut floreant et crescant \/\u00a0So they may flourish and grow<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Et dignus esse titulo Pelicani \/\u00a0And to be worthy of the title of Pelican.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Hic per honorem et manum \/\u00a0Here by my honor, my hand<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Et cor meum juro ego, &lt;&lt;Name&gt;&gt;. \/ \u00a0and my heart swear I, &lt;&lt;Name&gt;&gt;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I used this for inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>I also looked through a lot of common Latin phrases, mottoes, and other chant texts. I used a Latin verb list as well, to try to have some hope to get the right tense and use. I knew I wanted to use the Midrealm motto (of sorts) of &#8220;Draco Invictus&#8221; in the piece because of its strong connections to the people. I also wanted to be sure this was a balance between Regent and People (I am Eastern after all!) but to have it come from the voice of both.\u00a0I did not name specific regents in order to make it useful on the longer term.<\/p>\n<h2>The Result<\/h2>\n<p>What I wound up with was this<strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/mbouchard.com\/aneleda\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/salve_draconis1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Here is the sheet music to Salve Draconis.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Salve Draconis, Coronae Mediterranae<\/strong><br \/>\nHail Dragon, Crown of the Middle Kingdom<br \/>\n<strong>Vita, dulcedo, honoro&#8212;- Salve!<\/strong><br \/>\n[Hail] our life, our sweetness and our honor!<br \/>\n<strong>Ad te clamamus, <\/strong><br \/>\nthe thee we cry<br \/>\n<strong>Coronam qui meruit feres <\/strong><br \/>\nLet he who won the crown bear it<br \/>\n<strong>Ad te suspiramus, labore et honore<\/strong><br \/>\nto thee do we send up, our labor and honor<br \/>\n<strong>in hac pia publicae<\/strong><br \/>\nin the dutiful desires of the republic<br \/>\n<strong>Eja ergo, justitia nostra,<\/strong><br \/>\nquick then Our justice<br \/>\n<strong>Illos tuos aeternam oculos <\/strong><br \/>\nthose eternal eyes<br \/>\n<strong>ad nos converte.<\/strong><br \/>\n(to us turn.)<br \/>\n<strong>in fidem, benedictum, vox populi tuis<\/strong><br \/>\nin faith, blessed voice of your populace<br \/>\n<strong>nobis, post hoc exsilium ostende.<\/strong><br \/>\nunto us after this honor show<br \/>\n<strong>O justice: O pia: O Medii<\/strong><br \/>\nO justice: O loving: O Midrealm<br \/>\n<strong>Draco Invictus.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The piece was performed as the reigning King and Queen,\u00a0Ragnvalder Jonsson and Arabella Silvermane, processed into the hall toward the thrones.
