Sometimes people as me “how to I get started being a bard??”<\/p>\n

It’s a hard question to answer because I can’t look at someone and know how they perform, what’s easy, what is a challenge…<\/p>\n

So I made this list to help anyone who is trying to begin that path make a “performance playlist” that is diverse and yet works for them! This way you can choose a diverse set of pieces that are to your own taste and ability, as well as interest.<\/p>\n

Here’s how it works –
\n– choose three categories
\n– pick one piece for each you’ve chosen
\n– learn it really well
\n– perform it
\n– repeat until you have a good set list!<\/p>\n

You could start with….<\/p>\n

1) a piece that inspires the folks you play with most (SCA-appropriate)
\n2) a piece that suits your own persona (maybe period, maybe not)
\n3) a piece that is period
\n4) a song\/piece that you can teach quickly (like a round)
\n5) a song everyone knows and sings along with or interact with (could be a filk, period, more modern SCA piece, whatever SCA appropriate thing…)
\n6) a piece that’s not often heard in your area
\n7) an original SCA-appropriate piece
\n8) a piece that uses an instrument of some kind (drum, harp, whatever…)
\n9) a piece that’s in a language other than your own
\n10) a piece that is very short and memorable<\/p>\n

If someone chooses five from this list, whatever they are, they’ll be on their way to having an excellent SCA repertoire.<\/p>\n

Another way<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ratheflaed DuNoir suggested on the SCA Bardic Arts Facebook Group that every bard should know the following:
\n1) A funny story\/song
\n2) A sad story\/song
\n3) A song to sing the camp to sleep
\n4) A song of their homeland
\n5) A song for the children<\/p>\n

These are excellent expansions or a good short alternative list from which to choose…..<\/p>\n

My own answers to this -Aneleda’s List – could be:<\/p>\n

1) “I am of the North<\/a>”\u00a0 <\/strong>-(<\/em>an original piece that my fellow fighters like to hear and sing)<\/em> – or\u00a0 <\/strong>“Lifeblood<\/a>” by Mistress Wyndrith Birginsdottir <\/strong> (a piece that inspires the folks you play with most)<\/em>
\n2) “Maiden in the Moor Lay<\/a>” Anon old English piece<\/strong> (a piece that suits your own persona(<\/em>
\n3) “All in a Garden Green<\/a>” or “Three Ravens<\/a>” <\/strong>(a piece that is in the SCA pre-1500 period<\/em>)
\n4) “Hey Ho Nobody Home”<\/strong> or “Three Blind Mice<\/a>” (Ravenscroft)<\/strong> (a song\/piece that you can teach quickly to others)<\/em>
\n5) “Ode to Endewearde<\/a>” (original local anthem) OR<\/em> “Dona Nobis Pachem” round\u00a0<\/strong>(a song everyone knows and sings along with or interact with) <\/em>
\n6) “I have a Younge Sister<\/a>”\u00a0<\/strong> (a piece that’s not often heard in your area) <\/em>inspired by John Fleagle’s version
\n7) “Follow Me<\/a>” – a love song sung by a fighting lady<\/strong>\u00a0 (an original SCA-appropriate piece) <\/em>a piece I wrote
\n8) “The Herne<\/a>“<\/strong> (a piece that uses an instrument of some kind) <\/em>inspired by John Fleagle’s version
\n9) “Amirilli Mia Bella<\/a>” <\/strong>(a piece that’s in a language other than your own) <\/em>an Italian by Giulio Caccini, 1601
\n10) “Jaden’s Shield<\/a>” original, funny song <\/strong>(a piece that is very short and memorable)<\/em><\/p>\n

BUT if I were to just to, say, choose a set of five: I am of the North, Dona Nobis Pachem, Follow Me (or Lifeblood), The Herne, and Jaden’s Shield would be a solid set from this list.<\/p>\n
